Gin Cooley Drops Her Single "Unattainable" Ahead of Her New EP "Gin"

Every once in a while, you come across a track that speaks to you, and not just through some pretty lyrics or a nice, catchy beat. I mean it talks to your very soul, reaches within you and grabs something essential inside you, makes you vibe along the same length.

For me, such a song was “Unattainable” by American indie artist Gin Cooley. With a subtle voice that immediately puts one in mind of Lana Del Rey, Cooley is an artist to listen to on a chilly morning, as I am doing now. Feeling the cool wind on my bare skin flows perfectly with Cooley’s detached and soft voice.

The song is delectably short and cuts off abruptly, just as you were getting used to the rhythm and the style. And while this might be a flaw for other tracks, with “Unattainable”, it only leaves you craving more. So what do you do? The only thing you can, which is heat the ‘repeat’ button and settle in to properly enjoy it this time.

The voice itself, as I mentioned, bears a definite trace of Lana Del Rey, but it’s by no means a copy. Many artists these days do that, they model their sound and their voice to mimic that of a famous artist in order to have their big break, but not Gin Cooley.

Cooley seems to be one of those truly unattainable woman (appropriate title, huh?) who are a relic from the 1920s. Her voice makes you think of poetry and of Paris in its glory days, when it served as an international hub for artists. Aside from the slightly synthetic feel of the song (which screams 2020), you can easily picture this tune playing in the background of some deep, meaningful conversation between James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway.

“Unattainable” is a delicate and intimate track that makes you feel as if you know Cooley personally. It gives you a glimpse into her wonderfully colored imagination and makes you want to see her perform it live, for she no doubt kills it.

But until that will be possible, you settle for listening to “Unattainable” on repeat and look forward to her brand new EP, “Gin”, coming out at the end of this month (May 29th).

A delightful, one of a kind sound.
