José James Announces New Album, Drops Single “They Sleep, We Grind (for Badu)”

José James, the genre-blurring jazz artist, announces his new album, 1978: Revenge of The Dragon, out May 16, 2025. Arriving alongside the announcement, he drops the single and video for “They Sleep, We Grind (for Badu),” a hypnotic groove steeped in dub, funk, and sampledelia.

José James, the genre-blurring jazz artist, announces his new album, 1978: Revenge of The Dragon, out May 16, 2025, via Rainbow Blonde Records. Recorded live to tape in one take at Dreamland Studios—a restored 19th-century church near Woodstock, NY—the album fuses the raw energy of punk with jazz, soul, and funk. While James’ latest LP, 1978 (released last year), captured the glitz of Studio 54, Revenge of The Dragon embodies the gritty, underground spirit of downtown’s Mudd Club, drawing inspiration from jazz fusion, kung fu cinema, and Blaxploitation films. The album features a mix of four originals and four reimagined classics, including The Rolling Stones’ “Miss You,” Herbie Hancock’s “I Thought It Was You,” the Bee Gees’ “Love You Inside Out,” and Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You.”

Arriving alongside the announcement, he drops the single and video for “They Sleep, We Grind (for Badu),” a hypnotic groove steeped in dub, funk, and sampledelia. Co-directed by José James and Joseph Digiovanna, the video is a tribute to classic 1970s Shaolin kung fu films, with James starring as Twin Tiger, a martial artist battling a series of foes—played by his bandmates Jharis Yokley, Ebban Dorsey, Marcus Machado, Brett Sanders, and Takuya Kuroda—in an action-packed woodland showdown.

Blending deep basslines with raw percussion, “They Sleep, We Grind (for Badu)” delivers a mesmerizing rhythm, anchored by its mantra-like hook: “They sleep, we grind / Man, f--- your nine to five.” James delivers an artist’s rallying cry, weaving lyrical nods to Bob Marley and Nas while channeling influences ranging from George Clinton and J Dilla to the ethereal mysticism of Erykah Badu, whom he recently honored with through his On & On album.

“‘They Sleep, We Grind (for Badu)’ is my tribute to the iconic kung fu cinematography of late 1970s filmmakers like Yuen Woo-ping, Chang Cheh, and Lau Kar-leung, along with the legendary work of the Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest studios,” José James shares. “It’s also a tribute to musician and fashion icon Erykah Badu, one of the greatest living artists of our time. The phrase ‘They Sleep, We Grind’ is something that she posts a lot on social media and it inspired the song—along with her amazing martial arts and boxing videos. She has a killer right cross!”

Featuring José James and Taali on vocals, 1978: Revenge of The Dragon brings together a powerhouse ensemble. BIGYUKI commands the keys and analog synth, while Jharis Yokley drives the rhythm on drums. Bass duties are split between David Ginyard (Blood Orange, Terence Blanchard) and Kyle Miles (Meshell Ndegeocello, Nick Hakim). The all-star brass section includes trumpeter Takuya Kuroda, rising alto saxophonist Ebban Dorsey, and the versatile Ben Wendel on tenor sax.

This spring, James embarks on a U.S. tour, bringing his electrifying live show to cities across the country. Fans can catch previews of Revenge of The Dragon at upcoming shows in Washington, D.C. (Coolidge Auditorium, Library of Congress), Cincinnati (Caffè Vivace), Indianapolis (The Jazz Kitchen), New York City (Blue Note Jazz Club), and Truro, MA (Payomet Performing Arts Center), with more dates to be announced soon. Victoria Canal Drops Her Anticipated Debut Album “Slowly, It Dawns”

Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Victoria Canal has just released her anticipated debut album “Slowly, It Dawns” via Parlophone / Elektra Records.

ictoria Canal Drops Her Anticipated Debut Album “Slowly, It Dawns”

Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Victoria Canal has just released her anticipated debut album “Slowly, It Dawns” via Parlophone / Elektra Records.

The 12-song collection, co-produced by Canal with Eg White (Adele, Kylie Minogue, Sam Smith) and Kevin Farzad (Clinton Kane), finds the 26-year-old Spanish-American musician embarking on a path that mirrors the unravelling of the human experience. “Life does feel like the sun rising,” she shares of the record’s evocative title. “You come into the world with very little clarity on the way things are – everything's a little hazy and confusing. Then, as you get older, your eyes adjust to what life is; it gets messy and complicated, then spiritual and expansive.”

Written over the course of three years and recorded between London and Los Angeles, the album captures this sentiment as much musically as it does lyrically: Canal’s stunning range is on full display across each of the genre-blurring tracks. The culmination of a lifetime of musical knowledge, experimentation and a fearless approach to her craft, Canal’s debut album marks a new chapter: a moment of newfound clarity about the artist she wants to be.

The focus track today, “Vauxhall,” which premiered on BBC Radio 2 last night, is the final single in the album’s narrative arc. The mid-point of the album, it marks a rebirth of sorts, where “hangxiety breeds resurrection.” The story begins with the flirtatious summer’s day of “June Baby,” turning to night with the sweaty and experimental “California Sober” into the early hours of the next morning with “Cake,” hiding in the excesses of escapism. Coming down from the high, we reach the spacey self-doubt of album highlight track “15%,” and “Vauxhall” follows as the sun rises over a new day, new beginnings and new possibilities.

The official visualiser for “Vauxhall” sees Canal weigh up the often confusing and conflicting paths available to us in life. The song explores a mid-twenties crossroad between following her dreams of career success, despite the struggle this entails, and leaving it all behind to settle down into a quieter, more conventional life. Ultimately, as the song’s climax suggests, there was never any choice for her: music was always her path.

2024 marked a landmark year for Canal, finally sharing music from her debut album, touring worldwide on her headline ‘Just What I Needed’ tour, winning her second Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically, and appearing to sing and play piano on “Paradise” with Coldplay at Glastonbury Festival. She also sang backing vocals on three songs on the band’s 2024 album Moon Music. The release of her debut album sees Canal embark on her Slowly, It Dawns headline tour through February and March, including a night at NYC’s Brooklyn Made on February 20 and LA’s Troubadour on March 18.

Niambi Releases Her Debut Solo EP Taboo

DMV-raised and Puerto Rico-based multidisciplinary artist Niambi just released her debut EP entitled “Taboo”, via Easier Said. Alongside the EP, Niambi shares the visuals to the track “No Budget” directed by CEOJAY, which cinematically portrays the multitudes of Niambi as a mother, spiritual leader, and young woman.

Taboo is ultimately a celebration of freedom, with Niambi letting loose and showcasing her confidence. The project follows Niambi’s move from New York City to Puerto Rico embracing the natural surroundings of Puerto Rico’s environment. Niambi shares about Taboo, “On this project, I’m giving myself permission to say what I need to say and do what I want to do. I’m allowing myself to take up more space. And I love it here.

As a whole, Taboo explores the various sonic inspirations that have surrounded Niambi her whole life. Those inspirations can be heard on her singles “Ain’t Shit,” which explores R&B, “Soccer Mom,” which has a trap-like beat and was highlighted by Rolling Stone and CLASH Magazine, and “Rocksteady,” which has a Jersey Club air, along with the previously unreleased tracks “No New Friends,” which pulls from Niambi’s rock band days, “RUN IT!,” which echos 90s rap and “No Budget,” which hails inspiration from alternative rap. Additionally, “Soccer Mom” was also followed by a MajorStage live session featuring Portia Rolle on guitar, who is the grandmother of Niambi’s child and has played on records for artists including Elton John, Notorious B.I.G. and Lil Kim.

After establishing herself as one-half of the neo-soul / hip-hop duo OSHUN, Niambi is jumping headfirst into solo waters for the first time with Taboo. During their tenure, OSHUN received acclaim from outlets like Billboard, Rolling Stone, The FADER, NPR, PAPER, and collaborated with artists like Princess Nokia, Jorja Smith & LION BABE. The duo have also performed at Glastonbury, Afropunk and Melt! Festival, and were direct support for Lauryn Hill’s 2020 North American tour. In 2022, OSHUN released their final album, vol. ii.

Coheed and Cambria Announce Co-Headline Tour and Release New Single/Video

Coheed and Cambria shares new single “Someone Who Can” from their forthcoming album The Father of Make Believe, which is set for release March 14th via Virgin Music Group. In conjunction with the new song, the band shares its heartwarming Mason Mercer-directed video where we get a glimpse at the early days of Coheed and Cambria in and around their hometown of Nyack, New York. “Someone Who Can” follows the previously shared The Father of Make Believe singles “Blind Side Sonny” and “Searching For Tomorrow” along with Claudio Covers, which arrived at the end of last year and features eight songs reimagined by primary songwriter and lead guitarist Claudio Sanchez including “Just Like Heaven” by The Cure and “Welcome To New York” by Taylor Swift, among others.

“Someone Who Can” is arguably the band’s most accessible song in their 24 year career. When asked about the meaning behind the song, Claudio remarked, "When you’re growing up, you’re perpetually trying to understand the world that’s changing around you. Over time, it’s comforting to reach the conclusion that you’ll never truly have things figured out."

Along with the release of the new song and video, Coheed and Cambria announces a North American co-headline summer tour with Taking Back Sunday with support from Foxing on all dates. The 25-date tour produced by Live Nation, kicks off on August 16th in St Louis, hitting some majestic venues, including the massive PNC Bank Arts Center in New Jersey, picturesque Red Rocks in Denver and the Greek Theatre in both Los Angeles and Berkeley, California. The whirlwind run wraps up at Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery in Seattle on September 21st. Tickets are on sale now HERE.

Ahead of their run with Taking Back Sunday, the band will embark on The Infinite Arc co-headline arena tour with Mastodon, following the Tool in the Sand festival with Tool, Primus, Mastodon, Eagles of Death Metal and more in the Dominican Republic this March. This July, the band will perform at 2000 Trees with Kneecap, Taking Back Sunday, Alexisonfire, and more in the United Kingdom. This November, Coheed will embark on their S.S. Neverender 2025 cruise with Thursday, L.S. Dunes, The Dear Hunter, Illuminati Hotties, Zulu and more. Tickets available HERE.

The Father of Make Believe continues the narrative of The Amory Wars / Vaxis universe, following Coheed and Cambria’s 2022 album Vaxis Act II: A Window of the Waking Mind. The Father of Make Believe will include the aforementioned singles “Blind Side Sonny,” arguably Coheed and Cambria’s most aggressive track to date that was complemented by a Max Moore-directed video that unveiled a new villain in The Amory Wars realm, and “Searching For Tomorrow,” which arrived with an Anthony Scheppard-directed and animated video.

For the last 20 years, Coheed and Cambria have continuously broken the mold of what a rock band can be, forging their own path and building a universe around their music unlike any other. Whether it is in the way their genre-spanning approach to songwriting has allowed them to bridge worlds without being contained to one, or the multifaceted story arc of their albums and comic book series which mark the longest running concept story in music, Coheed and Cambria have consistently shaped new standards, never conformed. Comprised of Claudio Sanchez (Vocals / Guitar), Travis Stever (Guitar), Josh Eppard (Drums) and Zach Cooper (Bass) the band has gripped listeners and press around the globe with their visionary compositions and conceptual mastery.

Check out the “Someone Who Can” visual below, and stay tuned for more from Coheed and Cambria coming soon.

Jade Turner Reveals Cathartic Lessons of Growth on Third Studio Album, “Breathe”, Out Feb. 7th

A masterful storyteller and dynamic vocalist, trailblazing Canadian singer-songwriter, Jade Turner, invites listeners on a compelling journey of realization and growth on her remarkable third studio album, “Breathe”, out Feb. 7th.

A masterful storyteller and dynamic vocalist, trailblazing Canadian singer-songwriter, Jade Turner, invites listeners on a compelling journey of realization and growth on her remarkable third studio album, “Breathe”. Courageously sharing her most personal project to date, Turner’s diary-like songbook of lessons learned through lived experience offers a collection of thought-provoking, empowering, and poignant songs that continue to resonate long after being heard. Her exceptional, award-winning songwriting and powerful delivery take center stage as she bravely covers topics that include bullying, addiction, self-discovery, and anxiety. Displayed across a musical spectrum of genres - Americana, Roots, and Country, and a range of tempo, “Breathe” features collaborations with legendary artist Crystal Shawanda, and Sebastian Gaskin. On eleven thought-provoking tracks, Turner delivers an unforgettable album that resonates with authenticity, emotional depth, and unwavering strength.

Following the biggest year of her career to date, in 2024 alone Turner received national features on Breakfast Television, eTalk, was a semifinalist in SiriusXM’s Top of the Country competition, and reached over 500,000 streams of her catalogue. She also received her 27th Manitoba Country Music Award nomination and fourth career win, the Vince Fontaine Indigenous Song Award at the 2024 SOCAN Awards, and the Kevin Walters Memorial Songwriting Award from Manitoba Music. Turner performed at the 2024 iHeartRadio Canadian Country Music Awards pre-show presented by TD and was a featured artist at the National Music Centre and SiriusXM’s joint presentation of EQ Live. Along with receiving career-spanning national airplay from CBC Radio and support from NOW Country and NCI FM, Turner’s music frequently appears on the Indigenous Music Countdown. Additionally, she has received multiple award nominations from the Aboriginal People’s Choice Music Awards, Western Canadian Music Awards, and was awarded “Best Country Album” at the 2017 Indigenous Music Awards.

Firmly centered between Americana and Country, Jade Turner’s “Breathe” is a musical encyclopedia of originality, creativity, and the transformation of experience into lessons. Written throughout a time of significant change and transformation, namely becoming a mother, navigating divorce, and the pain of dealing with a loved one in the throes of addiction, Turner’s era of evolution served as the launchpad for her most personal album to date. Deeply rooted in the tradition of storytelling, Turner uses songwriting as her main form of expression, allowing her to create an anthology of songs both experienced and imagined. Turner shares, “The album is a therapy session for me. I don’t normally talk about my vulnerabilities, but this is my way of talking about it - by singing it. ”On “Breathe”, Turner diversifies her sound by delving more deeply than ever before into the Americana and Roots genres, moving away from the boundaries of Country music and allowing her to express herself in ways she previously abstained from. “I wrote this album from a place of ‘what do I need to hear”? I’ve grown into myself, and this album represents my best work - it’s real and authentic to who I am”.

On focus track “You’re Only Nice When I’m Leaving”, Turner surveys the relationships of her past in an anthemic Country ode to the outcomes of ignoring her intuition. With sparse instrumentation featuring just guitar and vocals, Turner’s shrewd songwriting strikes a lyrical chord as she relatably conveys an understanding of her longstanding patterns in relationships. By following her instincts, Turner delicately delivers a message of self-trust and growth, leaving listeners with an empowering sense of determination and clarity.

Five previously released singles demonstrate Turner’s neverending breadth of skillful songwriting and vocal force. Her 2023 release, “Deadweight”, penned with Canadian music legend Crystal Shawanda, is a powerful and moving song about bullying and finding the strength to move past it, marking an important, full circle moment for Turner as she notes that seeing Shawanda on TV was the first time she ever saw someone who looked like her creating and performing music, inspiring the young artist to launch her music career. “That Wind", inspired by Turner's lifelong experience with dogsledding, is a soul-stirring call to pursue one's dreams and was released upon Turner being named a finalist in SiriusXM Canada’s Top of the Country competition. Title track, “Breathe”, co-written with Rhianna Rae Saj and rising star Sebastian Gaskin who later lent his background vocals to the song, is a calming track about anxiety - grounding oneself and overcoming the relentless grip of the inner turmoil felt while experiencing the hard to shake emotion. Blending elements of R&B, Roots, and Americana, the chorus for “Breathe” builds in intensity to mirror the effects of anxiety. The deep vibrations of the track are designed to be a sensory tool, helping listeners ground themselves and return to their breath.

In a testament to her masterful songwriting and compelling storytelling, Jade Turner's "Breathe" reshapes life’s most challenging moments into songs that can ease the burden of change. Her ability to tackle complex themes like addiction, anxiety, and self-discovery with both vulnerability and empowerment highlights her fearless approach to songwriting. More than an album, "Breathe" serves as a reflection of Turner’s evolution as an artist and a woman, boldly embracing every facet of her journey. As she continues to cement her place as one of Canada's most prolific songwriters, Turner welcomes listeners to find solace, strength, and clarity in their own stories with "Breathe".

Scotland Based Techno Artist Mha Iri Shares Her New EP, "Leader Of The Pack"

Scotland’s techno chart-dominating powerhouse Mha Iri unveils her latest project to mark her new signing to [PIAS] Électronique - a series of four EPs themed around the four Elements. First EP, three-tracker "Leader Of The Pack" representing the element of Earth, is out now.

Scotland’s techno chart-dominating powerhouse Mha Iri unveils her latest project to mark her new signing to [PIAS] Électronique - a series of four EPs themed around the four Elements. First EP, three-tracker Leader Of The Pack representing the element of Earth, is out now. The first single/title track already received strong support from Mixmag, Magnetic Mag, DJ Mag and SiriusXM.

The release follows her latest five-date tour in Australia, including Eat The Beat Festival alongside Carl Cox, Chris Liebing, Lilly Palmer. Ahead, she’ll play Gashouder with Awakenings for New Year. Mha Iri’s 2024 releases on Drumcode, FOA and TRICK have made her assertive, hyper-speed brand of techno with melodic elements a key part of the scene in very short time.

The Elements theme: Mha Iri is very aware of her Scottish/Gaelic roots, including a ‘deep love for nature. This series of EPs reflects this connection. The four elements – Earth, Air, Fire and Water - provide endless creative interpretation, allowing me to express various aspects of myself as a person and artist’ she says. ‘I found this beautiful amethyst crystal cave in Scotland for the artwork—it felt perfect.’ The first EP, themed around Earth reflects her own grounded and down-to-earth approach in her personal life and career.

EP focus track "Go Hard" goes well hard with rampageous percussion, distorted morse code stutters, mighty breakdowns using doppler to twist the sonic knife as the drop approaches, and a funky male vocal riff – all of it full of hooks from sudden changes or omissions.

"Give You" ft. Argy (UK) keeps up the punishing pace with arp-y bass, a solid wall of beats, and higher, resonant vocal riffs, with melodic phases competing with ripped metal stabs in the breakdown.

Recent EP single "Leader Of The Pack": hits the ground running with racing techno beats, hoover synth chords, and dark, no-prisoners spoken lyrics, while use of doppler FX and multiple stabs keep the vibe dynamic, urgent, relentless. Big breakdowns with siren-sound builds and deep-plunge drops complete the perfect dance fuel.

An emerging star, first in Australia, and now returned in triumph to her native Scotland, Mha Iri was 2023 Beatport #1 best-selling Hard Techno female artist + #2 in Peak Time/Driving Techno, while her five Drumcode and Filth On Acid releases all made Top 10, with two at #1. Her extensive touring schedule this year included Awakenings, Terminal V, Tomorrowland, and killer sets at this ADE's Gashouder for Drumcode X Awakenings and Dockyard X Mystic Garden Festival.

When you were just starting out as a music creator, who were some of your artistic influences, and when did you know for certain that you had the talent to take your musical aspirations to the next level?

Definitely Patoranking/Fela Kuti/Wizkid/Burna Boy.

I knew I had it in me from a very tender age. It just was not marinated and over the years I have done that and still doing.

Congratulations on the release of your new single "My Race", as well as its live music video. Tell us about your creative process for the development of the song in terms of the theme and message. Also, who produced it?

I had the song right there in my head . I think I flew over to New Zealand discreetly for a couple of things and hit up one of my producers that I need to get a studio session in. Got on the mic and the rest was history.

But prior to that, EARDRUMZ, my producer. I told him I needed a calm & chill vibe and I think we went back & forth once or twice and the vibe just felt right.

We're blown away by the "My Race" music video; it really gave us a taste of what a live show of yours would look like. Why did you decide to film an acoustic version of the song with a backing band?

It felt right in my gut. It had to be done. You definitely know where something had to be done. Yeah. That feeling. That backing band you saw there are my team right there.

Is "My Race" a part of an upcoming EP or album you're working on? If so, what can you tell us about it? If not, what's next for you musically?

No. Just another phenomenal piece of art. There’s definitely more work in stock. But I will keep that for another day. The fans will understand.

How would you compare the Afrobeats music scenes in Australia vs New Zealand? Would you say that the audiences you perform for are receptive to Afrobeats compared to the R&B or pop sounds that they are used to?

Well, over the past 6 years, things have changed in my musical career and in general with the music scene. Personally. Its been more of me trying to put on a shoe that can fit as per my music style etc. At the time in New Zealand, more people were receptive towards afrobeats as it was a majority lover than Pop. I did not perform much of a pop style 6 years ago. But Afrobeats was a number 1 “go to” for most people.

Interview: Emzeezy Talks About His Newly Released EP "WHERE I'M AT"

Big thank you goes out to Bosnia and Herzegovina based rapper and producer Emzeezy who connected with DCWS for an exclusive interview to discuss his recently released EP "WHERE I'M AT", and much more.

I wanted to focus on the introspection, which has always been a part of my music, while still keeping the lyrical aspect alive which includes the various punchlines and flows.
— Emzeezy

How did you get started as a music creator, and who have been some of your influences in terms of producers and artists?

Well it kind of came gradually. When I was about 11 or 12, I started getting into hip-hop, listening to a lot of old school and early 2000s hip-hop on YouTube. This included artists such as Lil Wayne, Eminem, 50 Cent, Tupac etc. You know, all the usual suspects. As I got older I started getting into newer stuff and into alternative hip-hop.

At about 14 I started writing raps, I was listening to hip-hop basically 24/7. I wasn't thinking of ever really making songs, It was just sort of something that I enjoyed doing. I mention it all the time, writing songs always felt very therapeutic for me and it still does. Not long after, I started recording music and releasing it on Soundcloud and YouTube. I started out rapping on free beats and doing remixes. At the time, I didn't even think about making beats because, to be honest, I was rapping because I loved doing it. It was only a couple of years ago when I really started getting good at producing, mixing, mastering etc. I guess that's where I kind of began "doing it seriously" haha.

In terms of influences, there's a lot. I listen to all kinds of different genres. Some of my main influences would be The Notorious BIG, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, MF DOOM, Jay-Z, Three 6 Mafia, 50 Cent, Madlib, Kanye. Again, I listen to a lot of music, so don't take this as a top 10 or anything like that.

Congratulations on the completion and release of your new EP, "WHERE I'M AT". Tell us about your creative process as a rapper and producer for its three tracks.

Thank you! Well, with this EP, I wouldn't say I had an exact idea of what it should be or what it would sound like when I started making it. However, in the process of making it, I realised that most of the songs didn't really tackle how I was feeling at the time. It felt like I was avoiding something. And after a while, I kind of just decided to say to myself "Hey, let me make a shorter project where I can express exactly how I'm feeling right now". This is where the title track "Where I'm At" came from.

I didn't want to sugar-coat anything, whether I was expressing how I felt about myself or how I felt about other things, like the creative process and how for a while, I felt a bit bored and maybe even uninspired or discouraged with how everything was going. I took the same approach when making the other two songs on the project. I wanted to focus on the introspection, which has always been a part of my music, while still keeping the lyrical aspect alive which includes the various punchlines and flows.

How would you say that your latest EP differs conceptually and musically from your first, "EMPTY"?

I think they're similar in many ways but the main difference, in my opinion, was the fact that I took the more introspective approach on "WHERE I'M AT". I think "EMPTY" has that aspect to it as well but most of the focus on that project was on being lyrical and just making dope tracks.

Tell us about the hip-hop music scene in Bosnia and Herzegovina; is it easy to build a fanbase there and are there a lot of venues to perform?

Well the hip-hop scene here is pretty interesting to say the least. To elaborate, hip-hop as a genre isn't the most popular genre in Bosnia and Herzegovina but it is still popular, particularly amongst my generation and younger people in general. However, there aren't really many venues to perform at, especially when you're just starting out so I would say that it's a challenge to grow a fanbase.

With 2024 winding down, what are some of your goals musically for the next year?

My main goal is to try and release more music consistently in 2025. That's always the main goal, to release as much quality as possible. However, I don't think I'm fully done with 2024 just yet. I might drop a few more songs before the year ends, fingers crossed.

Brooklyn Post-Hardcore Band Common Sage Release Their New Album, "Closer To;"

Legendary independent New York-based rock label Equal Vision Records and Common Sage are excited to announce the release of Closer To;, the Brooklyn, NY-based post-hardcore band’s brand new studio album.

Legendary independent New York-based rock label Equal Vision Records and Common Sage are excited to announce the release of Closer To;, the Brooklyn, NY-based post-hardcore band’s brand new studio album (stream/purchase HERE). Recorded and produced by Brett Romnes (Anxious, Oso Oso, Hot Mulligan, The Movielife) at The Barber Shop Studios in Lake Hopatcong, NJ, Closer To; features the album’s new single, “47.”, a song about self reflection, specifically on some negative aspects that sometimes frontman Julian Rosen finds himself acting on. Watch the music video for “47.”, directed and edited by Rich Weinberger (Gatherers), below.

Additionally, Common Sage will be making numerous west coast appearances supporting Reggie & The Full Effect, kicking off on December 6 in Roseville, CA. A full listing of dates can be found below, and more information on tickets can be found on the band’s site HERE.

Whether it’s acknowledged or not, starting a “post-hardcore” band in this era is not a decision to be taken lightly. The genre, rife with copycats, naysayers, and gatekeepers, can be one of the most critical of its kind. This is why, upon first listen to Common Sage, one should keep an open mind. The Brooklyn, NY based quartet brings to the table not only a serious deference for their groundwork laying predecessors, but they offer something new to the scene altogether—which is much easier said than done.

Common Sage’s sound feels like a modern take on the melodic side of post hardcore with a strong influence from the legendary Long Island emo scene. When these dualistic stylings are partnered with a dissonant, cacophonous riff-storm, they sound something like Quicksand and Title Fight dancing a delicate ballet. This is no doubt a very calculated and deliberate musical high wire act, and it’s not something that can be accomplished by a band that has not done their due diligence.

Herein lies the secret to Common Sage; it’s less of what they choose to put on the canvas as artists, but more of what they choose to hold back that shows the true nature of the band. While something such as a simple three chord breakdown could have served them greatly in the short term—the band opts for much more artful choices, making veteran level structural decisions that you would expect from innovative songsmiths like Modest Mouse or mewithoutYou. It’s easy to see why industry pillars like Geoff Rickly and Steve Pedulla of the band Thursday or Jason Gleason of Further Seems Forever were quick to lend their talents and to the band's new music.

This is why it is so fitting that Sage, a medicinal herb, when burned is used to cleanse the air of all its impurities. One can only hope that Common Sage can accomplish something similar within their genre, clearing out the staid tropes of the past and making way for something new to appear out of thin air.

Common Sage will be making the following U.S. appearances next month. Dates below.

DECEMBER

06 — Roseville, CA — Goldfield Trading Post #

07 — Anaheim, CA — Chain Reaction #

08 — West Hollywood, CA — The Roxy #

10 — Denver, CO — Marquis Theater #

# — supporting Reggie & The Full Effect

Powerhouse Electronic Music Artist HAYLA Releases Her Debut Album "DUSK"

UK-based HAYLA is a powerhouse vocalist and high-calibur songwriter who just released her debut solo album "DUSK", featuring the singles “Freefall,” “Embers” and “Fall Again.”

London, UK-based HAYLA is a powerhouse vocalist and high-calibur songwriter who is called upon by many prominent electronic music acts–from Kx5 and John Summit to KYGO, Meduza and Sub Focus just to name a few–to write with and perform on their biggest singles. She now celebrates the release of her debut solo album DUSK (Restless Minds Music/Believe UK).

Touted a notable album by NPR Music, each song on DUSK runs deep exploring different themes of love lost and won to anxiety, regained strength and dreams. The ten-track collection recorded over three years, consists of all original songs along multiple styles and genres, penned and performed by HAYLA with production from a variety of producers including Andy Sheldrake, Blanke, Carl Ryder & Nick Henriques and more.

Highlights on HAYLA’s DUSK include the downtempo electronica piece “Unfold” that has a storytelling style of songwriting which she wrote to herself addressing the internal battle of wanting connection but understanding one needs to spend time on their own to be themselves and heal. The infectious “Visions Of You”--which HAYLA labels the happiest track on the album–is for when you’re star struck by infatuation and the thoughts of that one person that gets you through your day. The title song is an experimental track which houses 12 part choral vocal swells and a comforting beat, produced by HAYLA herself and inspired by her favorite time of day.

From John Summit’s mega hits “Where You Are” and “Shiver” to deadmau5 x Kaskade’s Top 40 smash “Escape” from their GRAMMY nominated Kx5 project, HAYLA has been dazzling dance fans across the globe alongside her own singles from DUSK , "Embers," "Fall Again" and "Freefall." HAYLA has over 6.6 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone with her biggest track–the Platinum certified “Where You Are” reaching over 161 million plays. Her song with KYGO “Without You” appears on his current album and most recently she paired with Meduza on their single “Another World.”

To support the release of DUSK in the U.S., HAYLA will make her first ever major headlining performance December 4 at The Roxy Theatre on the world famous Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. The high-production album release party will have HAYLA performing live many selections from DUSK as well as her popular collaborations such as “Shiver,” “Escape,” “Without You” and “Another World.” A limited number of tickets remain here.

Over the last year HAYLA has performed in front of sold out crowds at iconic venues around North America with her collaborators. The dance music sensation joined John Summit during his closing set of Coachella 2024 to perform their single “Shiver”' for thousands of fans in the festival’s famed Sahara tent and those watching the live stream from home–and then again caused buzz for her guest performance of “Where You Are” and “Shiver”' at his recent Madison Square Garden play. HAYLA also joined deadmau5 as a special guest for his ‘retro5pective’ shows at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and New York’s The Brooklyn Mirage and Kygo at his Palm Tree Festival events in Hawaii and the Hamptons. Look for HAYLA to join Kygo again for select European dates of his World Tour before the end of 2024.
